Mt. Morris Twp. Clerk resigns abruptly, Board sneaks in appointment

Mt. Morris Twp. Clerk resigns abruptly, Board sneaks in appointment

February 1, 2022 by GJ Staff 3 Comments

MOUNT MORRIS TWP-  The Clerk of Mount Morris Township is resigning after 24 years on the job following the corruption scandal of the current Administration.

Brenda Ashley, Democrat, just won her re-election in 2020 to a four year term. Now, she is resigning after a new wave of Democrats are taking over.

Clerk Ashley has been feuding with newly elected Supervisor Jolena Sims who some believe is “stacking the Board with her own selected people.”

According to the Mount Morris Township Meeting Minutes on their website, Supervisor Sims wanted her friend, Trustee DeWayn Allen as the new Clerk. Sims made a motion to appoint Allen and it was seconded by King. The yes votes included: Allen, King, Sims, Wilson, while Treasurer Armstrong voted no.

Allen voted for himself as Clerk and did not resign as Trustee at the time of the vote.

The Genesee Journal will be submitting a FOIA request and reaching out to the BOE to see if Allen could legally vote on himself as Clerk.

Following the appointment of Clerk: A Motion was made by Wilson, and supported by King to accept the resignation of DeWayn Allen as Trustee. The yes votes included Wilson, King, Armstrong, Sims, and Allen.

Allen voted for his own resignation, which is being looked into.

Since Allen had been appointed to Clerk, his Trustee seat was vacant. A Motion was then made by King, and supported by Allen to appoint Jona Kean as Mt. Morris Township Trustee. Wilson, Sims, Allen, and King voted yes, while Treasurer Armstrong voted no.

Members of the public are outraged as they did not know these changes were taking place, claiming it looks underhanded.

Residents believe that newly elected Supervisor Jolena Sims is to blame as she is “stacking the board with her selected people and that more corruption needs to be exposed.”

Treasurer Gayle Armstrong is now the only standing board member who is not connected to Supervisor Sims.
