Genesee County Jail Dealing with Inmate Mail Soaked in Illicit Substances

January 24, 2022 by GJ Staff Leave a Comment

Soon Genesee County Jail inmates will only receive copies of personal correspondence, rather than the originals due to a scheme that involves soaking the paper letters are written on in illicit substances such as methamphetamines and suboxone.  The inmates then ingest the contraband, similar to old blotter acid, to get a high.

A third party service in Saginaw will begin to scan the mail and then upload it for inmates to view on a kiosk. The turnaround time will be 24 hours and the system is expected to be up and running in a couple weeks.  There will be limited exceptions to the policy, such as formal legal documentation.
