Because of the $1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package, five federal unemployment benefits will be extended another six months in Michigan.
These programs are the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, Pandemic Unemployment Compensation, Mixed Earners Unemployment Compensation and the work-share program. All are now set to expire on Sept. 4th.
Michiganders who are currently receiving benefits from these programs will not experience an interruption. Those who were denied previously will receive new information on how to apply.
The stimulus package, also called the “American Rescue Plan,” also allows unemployment benefits to other kinds of workers not in the above programs:
- People who will not return to their workplace because the employer is not following Covid-19 guidelines
- People providing services to educational facilities who lost income because of Covid-19
- People who lost hours or were laid off permanently due to Covid-19
Other unemployed workers can apply to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for career search services provided by Michigan Works.
