Do you enjoy gardening, or are thinking about getting into it for the first time? There are some wonderful resources for Genesee County residents to get growing for free, or at a low cost! With the rising cost of groceries, backyard gardens are becoming more common.
The Genesee District Library offers free seeds through their Seed Library located inside the Fenton Branch. All you have to do is come in during their open hours from March to August, select the seeds you want, and complete a checklist of the seeds you are taking! The seeds are donated by different businesses and library patrons. If you have extra seed from your crops, you can even donate it back! More information can be found at: https://www.thegdl.org/seedlibrary/
Another resource for obtaining seedlings, as well as seeds is the Edible Flint program. They provide low-cost plant and seed bundles for residents of Genesee County. This year, they are offering 4 different bundles ranging from $10 to $15. The “Kitchen Bundle” contains 22 plants and 7 packs of seeds for just $12! Their herb pack is already sold out, and quantities are limited, so go https://www.edibleflint.org/ and order yours before the others are gone!
If you are in need of low-cost gardening tools, Dollar Tree carries many supplies, as well as 4 for $1 seeds. For $1.25 each, you can get a small hand trowel, hand rake, gardening gloves, plant clips, and even soaker hoses! They also carry many varieties of pots and planters for container gardening, including stackable options.
